Queens Gambit Announces Exciting Lineup for Chess Week 2024
Queens Gambit is thrilled to announce the official lineup for Chess Week 2024. From October 1-8, 2024, Pittsburgh will once again host a full week of chess-themed activities, engaging people of all ages and skill levels to connect over the game of chess. This year, Queens Gambit is partnering with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership to bring a range of events to Mellon Square, downtown Pittsburgh.
Chess Week 2024 Highlights:
Big Chess Sets in Mellon Square
October 1-8, 2024
Throughout the week, large, oversized chess sets will be available in Mellon Square, creating an open, interactive chess experience for the Pittsburgh community. These sets will be accessible daily, inviting everyone to play—from seasoned chess enthusiasts to curious beginners. Instructional signage will accompany each set to help new players learn the basics of the game.
“Let’s Learn Chess!” Session
October 6, 2024 – 12 PM to 4 PM, Mellon Square
Queens Gambit’s experienced chess instructors will lead a beginner-friendly “Let’s Learn Chess!” session. Participants will receive a guided introduction to the game, followed by practice sessions and a mini-tournament to apply their newfound skills. Chess sets and materials will be provided, and each participant will take home a guide to continue their learning journey.
Chess Week Scholastic Tournament
October 5, 2024 – 9 AM to 3 PM, Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh
In collaboration with the Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh, Chess Week will also feature a Scholastic Chess Tournament on October 5. Open to students from grades 1 through 12, this tournament will offer a space for young chess players to compete in a supportive and fun environment.
Special Guest Messages
Chess Week 2024 will also feature special video messages from key Pittsburgh leaders, including Mayor Ed Gainey, celebrating the city’s strong commitment to the game and its positive impact on youth development, leadership, and community building.
