Chess week pittsburgh
Since 2017, the first week of October has been officially recognized as Chess Week in Pittsburgh, a tradition established through a Pittsburgh City Council proclamation from District 8 to honor the work of Queens Gambit Chess Institute and celebrate the transformative power of chess in the Steel City.
Each year, Queens Gambit leads Pittsburgh in a citywide celebration of strategy, learning, and community connection, bringing together players, families, schools, businesses, and community partners from across the region. In 2025, Mayor Ed Gainey further recognized this work by declaring October 1–7 Queens Gambit Chess Institute Week in the City of Pittsburgh.
Now in its ninth year, Chess Week Pittsburgh returns October 1–8, 2026, with opportunities for Pittsburghers of all ages and experience levels to play, learn, compete, and experience chess in public spaces, schools, and community settings across the city.

Chess x Coffee at De Fer

Chess and coffee come together throughout Chess Week at De Fer Coffee & Tea, creating a casual space for Pittsburghers to play, connect, and enjoy the game over a cup of coffee.
Chess sets will be available throughout the week for customers to start a game with a friend, challenge someone new, or spend a few minutes at the board. Experienced player or complete beginner, everyone is invited to stop in, grab a coffee, and make their next move.
Chess in Mellon Square

Oversized chess sets return to Mellon Square throughout Chess Week, creating a visible and welcoming place in the heart of Downtown for Pittsburghers to stop, play, and connect.
Sets will be available for casual public play each day, with instructional signage and smaller chess sets helping new players learn how the pieces move, understand the basic rules, and begin playing independently.
The Duo Cup: Chess Week Pittsburgh Tournament and Celebration

The Duo Cup is the flagship event of Chess Week Pittsburgh 2026, welcoming students in grades 2–8 for a day of chess, learning, friendly competition, and celebration.
The event will feature a structured youth chess tournament, trophies, ribbons, certificates and prizes, along with family-friendly activities and community partners.
The Duo Cup will also feature the Pittsburgh Mascot Challenge, bringing together local sports mascots for a one-of-a-kind chess-themed showdown. The challenge will create a high-energy experience for students and families while bringing together Pittsburgh sports, youth learning, community, and chess.

Chess in Mellon Square | Downtown Celebration

Chess in Mellon Square will invite families, young people, experienced players, and beginners to enjoy an afternoon of casual chess and community connection.
Queens Gambit instructors and youth leaders will be available to teach the basics, facilitate games, and help participants find opponents. Stop by for a single game, stay for open play, or learn chess for the first time in a welcoming outdoor setting.
Chess Connects: McKeesport

Chess Week Pittsburgh comes to McKeesport for an evening of chess, learning, and community connection. Players of all ages and experience levels are invited to join Queens Gambit instructors for casual games, beginner-friendly instruction, and opportunities to learn and play together.
Hosted in partnership with Mayor Tom Maglicco and the City of McKeesport, the event will connect residents, families, young people, and community leaders through the game while highlighting chess as a tool for strategy, confidence, and connection across Allegheny County.
Chess After Dark: Community Movie Night

Chess Week Pittsburgh closes with Chess After Dark, bringing families and community members together for an evening of chess, connection, and film.
Before the movie begins, attendees can enjoy casual games, beginner-friendly instruction, and open play led by Queens Gambit instructors, along with popcorn, refreshments, and family-friendly activities.
The featured film will be Searching for Bobby Fischer, a family film exploring chess, competition, mentorship, and the importance of allowing young players to develop their own relationship with the game.
